OMM - IMS

Oilfield Material Management provides an extensive range of downhole drilling tools for rental to the oil & gas industry worldwide.

NEED

OMM had a manual system that they used to track their rental tools based on spreadsheets and paper printouts. However, this presented four problems:

  • The amount of information processing was in excess of 2,000 transactions a day, making it almost impossible to keep up with administration and trace a tool's location
  • Processing the transactions was slow - the shipping out of a tool required information to be duplicated into 12 different areas
  • There was scope for human error because of this duplication - if a user entered the wrong serial number this would cause problems between departments and potentially with customs control
  • Some clients were not being invoiced or were invoiced incorrectly due to lost or inaccurate information

OMM approached us to rectify these issues with a custom software solution.

SOLUTION

The solution, IMS, now means the data is stored in a central database which has removed the need to duplicate information and, in turn, has saved time and reduced the possibility of administrative errors. OMM now has instant access to their data which has brought benefits to both them and their customers as Jim Laird, OMM's IT Manager, explains: "IMS has allowed us to provide our clients with a faster turnaround for their orders. If a customer rings with an urgent requirement we can check availability whilst they are on the phone."

An audit trail gives OMM 100% traceability of all the transactions that take place in IMS and management are able to monitor the team to make sure they provide the high level of service that is expected.

BENEFITS

Introducing IMS has brought OMM the following benefits:

  • Reports generated highlight where there are equipment shortages or surplus
  • They also flag up where any inefficiency is occurring, such as the time taken to repair equipment
  • Invoicing module speeds up the invoicing process - OMM previously printed delivery tickets and typed them into a spread sheet to create the invoice but IMS now generates this
