SURFACE TECHNOLOGY SET TO MAKE A SPLASH AT OFFSHORE EUROPE

Technology usually only seen in films such as Minority Report and James Bond will be showcased by a North-east IT company during Offshore Europe next week (8-11 September 2009)

Codify, who recently moved to new premises in North Silver Street, Aberdeen, is the first company to bring Microsoft's latest Surface technology to the North east and one of the first in the UK to own it. The system is a fully interactive touch screen computer which removes the need for a mouse or keyboard.

The technology offers huge potential for the oil and gas sector to visualise and interact with data more easily. The arrival of the next generation computer at the oil and gas exhibition marks the start by Codify to develop Surface software applications specifically for the energy industry.

Katherine Rutherford, Sales and Marketing Manager at Codify, said: "We're hugely passionate about new technology and were keen to buy Surface as soon as it became available in the UK."

"Ideas like this have appeared in films over the last few years as the technology of the future. Now, with the recent introduction of touch screens into phones and mp3 players we have seen a giant leap in the way people interact with technology and it was only a matter of time before this progressed to the business arena. These advancements allow people to interact with information in ways we have never seen before and we expect this technology to be a growth area in the coming years."

Surface's interface is highly graphical and allows people to get the information they need at a glance. The screen allows multiple users to access information at any one time so users can collaborate and update information at the same time through the same screen.

A number of Codify's existing clients have already shown an interest in the new technology and the company expects Surface will prove popular at Offshore Europe.

Codify's development team is already considering practical ways for the oil and gas industry to benefit from Surface. For the Offshore Europe exhibition they are creating a proof of concept application that displays a map of all fields and wells in the North Sea. Users will then be able to zoom in and out to view different levels of detail, such as the depth and completion status of a particular well, all with the brush of their hand.

Codify has almost a decade's experience of designing building and supporting business software solutions. It works with companies to automate and improve core business processes through the use of custom software and actively develops customer service, financial management and information sharing applications.

The company, which employs 26 people, has seen demand for its services flourish and earlier this year reported an 85% increase on the previous year with a turnover in excess of £1.7 million.
